How does an AED work?
An AED, or Automated External Defibrillator, is a portable device used in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. The goal is simple: to restore the heart rhythm as quickly as possible and thereby increase the chances of survival.
Explained step by step
1. Turn on the AED
As soon as you open or switch on the AED, the device automatically starts giving spoken instructions. You are guided through the process step by step.
2. Apply the electrodes
Stick the electrodes onto the victim’s bare chest. The AED and the illustrations on the electrodes show you exactly where they should be placed.
3. Heart rhythm analysis
The AED independently analyses the heart rhythm. You do not need to do anything during this process, and you cannot make a mistake.
4. Shock advised or no shock
The AED will only advise a shock if one is necessary. If a shock is not needed, the AED will clearly tell you this as well.
5. Deliver the shock
With a semi-automatic AED, you press the shock button when the AED tells you to do so. With a fully automatic AED, the shock is delivered automatically.
6. Continue CPR
After the shock, or if no shock is required, the AED guides you through performing chest compressions and rescue breaths.
Can you use an AED?
Yes. An AED is specifically designed so that you can use it, even if you have no medical background. Thanks to spoken instructions and built-in safety checks, the device is safe and easy to operate. CPR training is recommended, but not mandatory.
What does an AED do and what doesn't it do?
Does:
• Automatically analyse the heart rhythm
• Provide clear spoken instructions
• Prevent you from delivering an unnecessary shock
Does not:
• Deliver a shock when it is not necessary
• Replace CPR
Why is speed so important?
In the event of cardiac arrest, the chance of survival decreases by about 10 percent per minute without assistance. If you act quickly and there’s an AED nearby, it can make all the difference before the ambulance arrives! Would you like to purchase an AED? Then check out our selection of AEDs on our website.
