What do defibrillator pads do?
Defibrillator pads analyse the heart rhythm and deliver the life-saving shock if required. The adhesive pads attach to the patient’s chest and connect directly to the AED.
Without functioning defib pads, an AED cannot analyse or deliver treatment. Regular replacement is therefore critical.
Correct placement of defibrillator pads
Correct placement is essential for effective shock delivery.
For adults:
- Place one pad on the upper right chest, below the collarbone.
- Place the second pad on the left side, below the armpit at rib level.
Always follow the visual instructions printed on the defibrillator pads and the voice prompts from the AED.

Child defibrillator pads
